About this fire map — sources & methodology
How the North Macedonia fire map works: our data sources (NASA FIRMS, official agencies), how fires are detected and confirmed, how often it updates, and its limitations.
What is Fire Map Today?
Fire Map Today is a free, continuously updated map of wildfires across North Macedonia. It brings satellite fire detections, official incident data, fire-danger levels and a page for every significant fire into one place. It republishes public data and is not an official warning service.
Where the data comes from
Active-fire detections come from NASA FIRMS (the VIIRS and MODIS satellite sensors). Official confirmation, incident names and status come from North Macedonia Protection & Rescue. The fire-danger level is a fire-weather index modelled from live weather via Open-Meteo, and region borders are official administrative boundaries.
How fires are detected and confirmed
Satellites measure heat as Fire Radiative Power (FRP). Detections close together in space and time are grouped into a single fire event with its own page. An event is marked confirmed when it matches an official incident or shows repeated, intense detections; otherwise it is shown as a possible detection that still needs verification.
How often the map updates
Satellites pass several times a day. The live map and fire lists refresh continuously as new detections and official data arrive, and every day is archived so you can look back over the whole season.
Limitations — please read
Satellite detections are not verified on the ground and are not 100% accurate. They can miss fires hidden by cloud or smoke, or between satellite passes, and can include heat that is not a wildfire (industrial sources, gas flares, agricultural burning). Never use this map for safety decisions — always follow your official emergency services.
⚠️ The fires shown are automatic satellite heat detections from NASA FIRMS. They are not verified on the ground and are not 100% accurate — they can include false alarms (industrial heat, gas flares, sun glint) or miss small or cloud-covered fires. Do not use this map for safety decisions; always follow official emergency sources.
