Live wildfire map for Bulgaria, updated continuously from NASA satellite hotspot detections and Copernicus EFFIS data. Fires here concentrate in the hot, dry months from July to September — in the Rhodopes and the Strandzha, on the Struma valley slopes, and in the stubble of the Danube plain after harvest. See where fires are burning right now, how intense they are and the danger level in each province, with a page for every significant fire and a day-by-day archive.

⚠️ The fires shown are automatic satellite heat detections from NASA FIRMS. They are not verified on the ground and are not 100% accurate — they can include false alarms (industrial heat, gas flares, sun glint) or miss small or cloud-covered fires. Do not use this map for safety decisions; always follow official emergency sources.

About this fire map

Fire Map Today shows wildfires across Bulgaria in one live view, built from NASA satellite heat detections and Copernicus EFFIS data. Nearby detections of the same fire are grouped into a single fire event with its own page, and every day is archived so you can look back over the season. It republishes public data and is not an official warning service — the Fire Safety and Civil Protection Directorate (ГДПБЗН) remains the authority.

How this map works

Zoom out for the national picture; zoom in and the individual satellite detections appear. Fires are shaded by intensity and each region is coloured by its fire-danger level. Satellites pass several times a day and cannot see through thick cloud or smoke, so a real fire can be missed for hours and some heat sources are not wildfires — always check official sources.

Where the data comes from

Active-fire detections come from NASA FIRMS (VIIRS and MODIS sensors). Burnt-area perimeters and the Fire Weather Index come from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) / Copernicus, and province borders from Eurostat GISCO. In an emergency call 112 and follow the Fire Safety and Civil Protection Directorate (ГДПБЗН).

Staying safe near wildfires

If you are near an active fire, do not rely on this map for safety decisions — satellite detections can be delayed for hours by cloud, smoke or the timing of the satellite pass, and some heat sources are not wildfires. Always follow your official emergency service and local warnings, prepare an emergency plan, and leave early if you are in a high fire-danger area. This is a free public information service, not an emergency-alerting system.

Fire season in Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s fire season runs from July to September. The most affected areas are the Strandzha and Sakar hills, the Rhodopes and the Struma valley — the driest and hottest parts of the country. On the Danube plain and in Dobrudzha most fires start in post-harvest stubble and dry grass rather than in forest. The steep terrain of the Rila and Pirin mountains makes fires there particularly hard to fight.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the fire data for Bulgaria come from?
Fires are automatic satellite heat detections from NASA FIRMS (VIIRS and MODIS sensors), combined with EFFIS / Copernicus burnt-area perimeters and the European Fire Weather Index. It is near-real-time satellite data, not verified on the ground.
What does a "confirmed" fire mean?
A fire is marked confirmed when it matches an EFFIS burnt-area perimeter, or when several intense satellite detections repeat in the same place. Others are shown as possible detections.
What is the fire-danger level?
It is the EFFIS Fire Weather Index (FWI), a 0–5 scale from Very low to Extreme based on weather. Higher means fires start and spread more easily.
How often does the map update?
Satellites pass several times a day; the map and the fire list refresh continuously as new detections and EFFIS data arrive.
What should I do if there is a fire near me?
This map is for information only. In an emergency call 112 and follow your national civil-protection and emergency services — never rely on satellite data for safety decisions.
Why does a fire appear where there is none — or not appear at all?
Satellites detect heat, which can be industrial sources, gas flares or agricultural burning, not only wildfires; and they miss fires hidden by cloud or smoke, or between passes. Treat every unconfirmed detection with caution.
Is the map free, and do I need an app?
Yes — it is completely free and works in any web browser on phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install.
When is the fire season in Bulgaria?
Bulgaria’s fire season runs from July to September. The most affected areas are the Strandzha and Sakar hills, the Rhodopes and the Struma valley — the driest and hottest parts of the country. On the Danube plain and in Dobrudzha most fires start in post-harvest stubble and dry grass rather than in forest. Who is responsible for fighting fires in Bulgaria?
The main agencies are ГДПБЗН, Изпълнителна агенция по горите, Спешен телефон (112). This site is not one of them and does not issue warnings.
