Frequently asked questions

What does this page show?

Every significant fire that satellites detected somewhere in Australia on 29 September 2026, grouped into fire events and listed by state. A fire appears on every day it was still burning, so the same event can show on consecutive days.

Why do the numbers change after the day has passed?

Detections keep arriving for a while after a satellite pass, and clustering can merge two events into one once the picture is clearer. Recent days are recomputed for a short period, so a count can move slightly before it settles.

Does this include every fire that day?

No. Satellites cannot see through thick cloud or smoke, and small or short-lived fires between passes are missed entirely. Some detections are also not bushfires at all — planned burns, agricultural burning or industrial heat. Treat this as the satellite record, not a complete list.

How do I see what is burning now instead?

Use the live map or the current fires list. This page is an archive of one day.

Unconfirmed satellite detections unless marked “Confirmed”. Satellites detect heat — which may be a bushfire, a hazard-reduction burn or industrial activity. Always follow your state fire agency, and in an emergency call 000.
