Frequently asked questions
How is a day’s fire count worked out?
We count the significant fires whose detection window overlaps that calendar day (UTC). A long-running fire is counted on every day it was active, so daily totals are not simply added together.
Why do only recent days appear?
The day list currently covers the live data window — the last few weeks of satellite data. The full searchable historical archive, going back across seasons, is being built from the national fire-history datasets.
What does “confirmed” mean on a day page?
It is the number of that day’s fires that matched an official incident from a state or territory fire agency. The rest are unconfirmed satellite detections.
